What You Told Us
The first round of consultation helped us understand what matters most to you locally. We heard support for new homes where they respond to local need, but also clear concerns that growth must be matched by infrastructure, a place that is easy to get around and high-quality green space.
Green Space and Nature
This was your clearest priority. Publicly accessible green space ranked highest overall, and many people told us they wanted to protect nature, support wildlife and retain the area's green character.
Infrastructure Before Growth
Education, healthcare utilities, drainage and community facilities were repeatedly raised. People were clear that new homes should be supported by the services and facilities needed for day-to-day life.
Movement and Congestion
People supported safer walking routes, better buses and cycling, while also raising concern about existing road capacity and congestion, including local pinch points such as Priory Crescent and Cuckoo Corner.
Homes for Local Needs
Affordable homes and starter homes for young people were the most selected housing priorities, with further support for managed accommodation for older people.
Southend's Identity
People spoke positively about the coast, access to green space, connections into London and community spirit. Some of you also told us Southend needs a stronger long-term vision and renewed civic pride.
How Our Plans Have Responded to Feedback

A connected network of high-quality public green space, accessible for people to use every day
Land for a 3-form entry primary school to meet local needs
Commercial floorspace to support local employment opportunities
Distinct, mixed-use local centres for Garon Parkside and Bakers Gate, intended as flexible spaces to be used by people of all ages. This can include a range of potential uses including a meeting places, dedicated places for young people, or spaces for classes and talks.
Improvements to the local transport network, to make it easier to use public transport more and fewer journeys by car
